Description:

Western Europe, probably Germany, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous and massive steel sword with a leather grip over the hilt. This longsword has a forged steel blade with a double edge and decorative incised linear shapes on and above the ricasso. Two ring grips project outward from the cross guard. The hilt is covered with a piece of leather with small ridges to facilitate a firm grip. The pommel consists of a bulbous tip that would help balance the heavy blade. This type of weapon was perfect for stabbing, and wounds inflicted with even short stabs could be deadly. Size: 48" L x 11.375" W (121.9 cm x 28.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000; ex-Andy Garcia collection
