Description:

South Pacific, Hawaii / Polynesia, Mo'orea area, Fatu Hiva, Hanavave, ca. 18th century. An intriguing hand-carved volcanic stone mortar presenting with an ovoid body, a rounded yet stable base, and a shallow bowl. Naturally embellished in lovely hues of mottled gray and taupe, this antique tool boasts a remarkably smooth interior. The stone's curved basin along with its petite size suggest it was likely used for mixing tattoo dyes. An excellent utilitarian object from South Pacific culture! Size: 5" L x 3.375" W x 2.5" H (12.7 cm x 8.6 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection acquired in 1986; ex-Pavadua Edwige, Hawaii, USA
