Description:

**Originally Listed At $700**

Polynesia, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A nice collection of 15 volcanic stone tools, made prior to European contact in Hawaii. There are six larger, adze-shaped stones, and eight smaller, pointed tools, and one that is made from a finer-grained stone and has a sharp, nearly square edge. Lacking any ore-bearing deposits on their volcanic archipelago, Hawaiian artisans crafted their tools based on their extensive knowledge of the different types of rock available to them - softer pumice for wood working tools and hard, fine-grained boulders to shape their adzes. Size of widest adze: 2.3" W x 5.75" H (5.8 cm x 14.6 cm). All are displayed together in a glass-fronted shadow box. Size of shadow box: 16" W x 12" H (40.6 cm x 30.5 cm)
