Anonymous (European, probably Italian, active XVIII to IXX century). "Saint Anthony of Padua Adoring the Christ Child" applique paper and textile collage, n.d. A remarkable applique paper and textile collage depicting Saint Anthony of Padua kneeling before the Christ Child who sits in the clouds above an open Bible. Donning traditional Franciscan dress, the saint presents a tonsured coiffure and a hooded, brown habit with a tied rope for a belt as a white lily stalk, symbolic of his purity, lies on the table beside the Bible. Size of collage: 4.5" W x 6" H (11.4 cm x 15.2 cm); of frame: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
St. Anthony was a Portuguese Franciscan priest and friar who died in Padua, Italy. Despite being born into a wealthy family, he was known for his intense devotion to the poor and sick, and holds the distinction of being canonized most quickly of all the saints. He is also known as the patron saint of lost things - objects, people, and souls. In art, he is often depicted with a book and the infant Jesus, based on a commonly told story of him reading a book and seeing the Christ Child's image in it.

- Condition: Set behind glass in custom frame with cardboard taped to verso; has not been examined outside of glass. Some fading to pigments, but otherwise collage appears to be in very good condition with clear imagery. Some chips and fissures to frame with losses to gesso and pigment; none of which affects collage. Suspension hoop on verso for display.
