Latin America, Mexico, ca. mid 18th century CE. A hand-carved and gessoed wooden Cristo (Crucified Christ) that captures the drama and sorrow of this tragedy in Christ's forlorn visage and ravaged body on a beautiful wood cross with silver termini on each arm and an elegantly turned round pedestal. The sculptor's delineation of anatomy is incredibly realistic with elongated limbs and a severely emaciated torso. The iconography is quite complete with stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds) upon the hands, chest, and feet. What's more, aside for the loincloth, Christ is depicted with as much of his suffering body visible as is possible. This piece moves well beyond any naive, folk approach and was very much influenced by academic study of anatomy and the dramatic Spanish Baroque style. Size: 10.25" W x 24.5" H (26 cm x 62.2 cm)

- Condition: Losses to fingers and left foot. Missing wood stakes through hands. Repair to left leg. Arms appear to have been carved separately. Small surface loss to upper end of cross. Expected surface wear to Christ figure with minor losses to gesso.
