Description:

Western Europe, probably Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful agate cameo displaying the head of a soldier with strong facial features and a forked beard of wavy locks, all surmounted by a heavy brow and a helmet with prominent ear flaps atop a coiled coiffure. His stern visage turns left in three-quarters position as he appears to hold a shield before his right shoulder with a military cloak draping his left. His helmet indicates that he may be Mars - Greek Ares - the Roman god of war, while his beard, round, sunken eyes, and furrowed brow are reminiscent of depictions of Hercules. In either case, the figure is surely a symbol of strength, bravery, and fortitude! Size (ring): 0.94" W x 1.44" H (2.4 cm x 3.7 cm); (cameo): 1.12" L x 0.86" W (2.8 cm x 2.2 cm); gold quality: 35% (equivalent to 8K+); weight: 17.6 grams
