Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful pair of stamped paste glass intaglios, both of ovoid form: one featuring a relief of Leda and the swan and the other of a seated lamenting woman with a soldier leaving in the background. Remains of a signature can be seen along the right periphery of the second. Popular throughout the 19th century and still collectible today, stamped glass intaglios, like these, are known as Tassies or Tassie gems after their Scottish creator, James Tassie, and his nephew, William Tassie, who developed a method to mold engraved intaglios into glass gems. Both can be easily set into a ring, necklace, or bracelet for an elegant piece of wearable history! Size of larger (lamenting woman): 0.9" W x 1" H (2.3 cm x 2.5 cm)

Similar intaglios of Leda and the swan can be found in the Beazley Archive of University of Oxford under reference numbers 683 and 1244.
