Description:

**Originally listed for $800**

Europe, 18th century CE. A modern 14k gold chain with an antique religious medal in a modern setting. The medal on one side shows Saint John of Nepomuk (Ioannes Nepomucenus) and the other is unfortunately difficult to read but depicts someone else - it seems to say "B A … R B A N" opening the possibility of it being either Pope Urban I or II. Size of chain 16" L; and of medal: 0.85" W x 1.05" H (40.6 cm; 2.2 cm x 2.7 cm).

John of Nepomuk (ca. 1345 to 1393) is the saint of Bohemia (modern day Czech Republic) who was martyred by being drowned in the Vitava River at the behest of King Wenceslaus. Due to his manner of death, he is the patron saint of protection from floods and drowning. Religious medals like these were made and sold to pilgrims and tourists; chances are, this one came from Prague, where St. John was the vicar-general of Saint Giles Cathedral from 1393 until his death later that year.
