Description:

Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Nativity painted in egg tempera on wood. Mary and Joseph present the Christ Child while shepherds kneel in adoration - a tender scene that focuses upon the principal figures of the Nativity in the foreground, all set before a tranquil landscape and stable in the background. The visages and hands of all figures are painstakingly modeled and display strong emotion. In addition, the voluminous quality of the figures' bodies and draperies demonstrates a departure from the relatively "flatter" Byzantine style - clearly a more Western approach inspired by the Renaissance. Back slats created to prevent warping indicate that this piece dates prior to the 1880s. A finely composed and painted icon representing this sacred scene. Size: 14" L x 11.75" W (35.6 cm x 29.8 cm).
