Description:

North America, probably Mexico or New Mexico, Spanish Colonial period, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. This is a large and well-preserved storage or travel trunk made from wood and wrought iron with simple but elegant embellishments. The body and domed lid are comprised of several wooden planks that are reinforced with iron brackets and fittings with tulip shaped tips. The hinged lid opens to reveal a deep interior cavity that was perhaps used as a storage chest or a traveling container for one's personal effects. Two iron handles are attached at either end, and a circular lock plate with a keyhole adorned with an openwork rim still holds the iron latch in place. The entire chest bears relatively smooth surfaces and attractive patina and clear signs of use. Size: 31" L x 15.5" W x 12.25" H (78.7 cm x 39.4 cm x 31.1 cm)
