Description:

Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century. Large gilded copper head having a ferocious expression, highlighted with a black resin painted, incised striated hairdo, flame brows, large eyes, wide wrinkled nose, openwork toothy mouth with long curled fangs, and tears running down his cheeks, a detail of profound iconographic significance in Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, expressing the deity's boundless compassion for suffering beings even in its most wrathful manifestation.. Third eye in the center of his forehead signifies omniscient divine wisdom. Custom pedestal block base.

Gilded copper repoussé work of this detail and expressive power represents the highest achievement of Tibetan ritual metalworking, produced for the great monastery shrines of the Himalayan world. Size: 5”H x 4.5”W (12.7 x 11.4cm).
