Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein (German, 1751-1829). "Two Fauns Carrying Tributes and Offerings to the Dionysia Festival Using a Carrying Polec." copper engraving, 1796. An original antique copper engraving with hand coloring by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein inspired by a piece in Sir William Hamilton's collection of ancient Greek vases. Hamilton was a Scottish diplomat, antiquarian, and archaeologist, as well as a British ambassador to the court at Naples from 1764 to 1800. Size (plate mark): 8" L x 11.5" W (20.3 cm x 29.2 cm) Size (frame): 20.125" L x 24.625" W (51.1 cm x 62.5 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

  • Condition: Engraving is mounted under glass in a custom frame. It has not been examined outside the frame, but appears to be in good condition with vivid imagery and vibrant hand coloring. Frame is also in good condition save minor scuffs here and there. Fit with suspension wire.
