South Pacific, Papua New Guinea, Massim Culture, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved lime spatula from the Massim region of southeastern Papua New Guinea, traditionally used in conjunction with betel nut chewing rituals. The upper terminal features a high-relief ancestral figure with classic stylized facial features, long nose, and intricate incised body ornamentation. The shaft is deeply decorated with abstract geometric and scroll motifs, tapering to a long and slender, slightly curved blade. These spatulas served both ritual and utilitarian rolesused to scoop powdered lime for chewing with betel nut while also reflecting clan identity, status, and spiritual beliefs. The carving shows the exceptional workmanship characteristic of Trobriand and Massim woodcarving traditions. Size: 22.5" L x 1.25" W (57.2 cm x 3.2 cm)
