Arnold Hague (American, 1840-1917). "Atlas to Accompany Monograph XXXII on the Geology of Yellowstone National Park" (Washington, D.C.: Julius Bien, 1904). First Edition. A monumental scientific achievement and one of the great cartographic works of American geology, this first edition of Arnold Hague's "Atlas to Accompany Monograph XXXII on the Geology of Yellowstone National Park" stands as the definitive geological record of the world's first national park. Published by the United States Geological Survey in 1904, this elephant folio volume contains 27 lithographic sheets - 24 maps (including 7 double-page) - expertly printed in color by Julius Bien, the master lithographer responsible for many of the U.S. Government's most celebrated atlases. Size: 19" L x 0.75" W x 22" H (48.3 cm x 1.9 cm x 55.9 cm)
Bound in its original gilt-lettered brown cloth, this atlas opens with a title page, table of contents, and two leaves of text, followed by a suite of breathtaking topographic and geological maps that capture the full grandeur and complexity of Yellowstone's volcanic landscape. Each plate documents the product of seven seasons of fieldwork conducted by Hague and his team between 1883 and 1889, during which they surveyed more than 3,000 square miles across the Yellowstone Plateau and surrounding ranges. Their studies of strata, volcanics, hydrothermal systems, and paleontology culminated in Hague's monumental "Monograph XXXII," to which this atlas was issued as a companion volume.
The maps include detailed renderings of the park's geyser basins, terraces, and mountain systems: "Gallatin Sheet," "Shoshone Sheet," "Canyon Sheet," "Lake Sheet," "Crandall Sheet," "Ishawooa Sheet" - each presented in both topographic and geological versions - as well as comprehensive charts of the "Yellowstone National Park and Portion of Yellowstone Forest Reserve." Additional plates offer specialized studies of "Mammoth Hot Springs," "Norris Geyser Basin," "Firehole Geyser Basin," "Excelsior Geyser Basin," "Upper Geyser Basin," "Shoshone Geyser Basin," and "Shores of Yellowstone Lake."
Hague's "Atlas" remains one of the most scientifically rigorous and visually compelling works ever produced by the U.S. Geological Survey. Its precision, artistry, and scope transformed the understanding of Yellowstone's geological story - capturing the park not just as a place of wonder, but as a dynamic, living system shaped by fire, water, and time. A cornerstone of American geological literature, this work continues to influence scientists, historians, and collectors more than a century later.
About the author: Arnold Hague was an American geologist whose career embodied the scientific spirit of the 19th century's great age of exploration. Born in Boston in 1840, Hague studied at Yale University, where his early interest in mineralogy and natural history set him on a path that would help define American geological science. After earning his degree, he pursued further study at the prestigious Mining Academy in Freiberg, Saxony, and the Universities of Heidelberg and Gottingen, immersing himself in the rigorous traditions of European geological research.
Returning to the United States at a time when the West was still largely unmapped, Hague joined Clarence King's Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel in 1870, a pioneering survey that laid the groundwork for modern geological mapping in the Rocky Mountain region. His precision, discipline, and eye for the relationship between geology and landscape quickly earned him distinction.
When the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories was established under Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden, Hague was among its leading geologists. He later became a founding member of the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S.) in 1879, where he continued to play a central role in shaping the scientific understanding of the American West.
Hague's work in Yellowstone National Park was especially significant. He conducted some of the earliest and most thorough geological studies of the region, mapping its complex volcanic formations and hydrothermal systems with meticulous care. His investigations of the park's geysers and caldera helped establish Yellowstone as a natural laboratory for understanding volcanic processes and laid the foundation for the park's reputation as a site of both scientific and national wonder.
Over the course of his long career, Hague published extensively on volcanic geology and mineral deposits, contributing valuable insights that bridged field observation with theoretical understanding. A respected scholar and a field geologist of exceptional endurance, he embodied the curiosity and perseverance that defined America's early scientific frontiers.
Arnold Hague's legacy endures in the maps, monographs, and studies that transformed the wild, mountainous landscapes of the West into the first detailed geological portraits of a nation in the making.
