A lovely first edition of "When God Laughs and Other Stories," written by Jack London (American, 1876 to 1916) and published by The MacMillan Company in 1911. Enveloped in an olive-colored cloth cover with red, light green, and gilt lettering and decoration, the book is one of only 3,748 published and comprised of 319 pages with a few illustrated plates throughout. This collection of tales explores themes for which London became famous, such as the struggle for survival in hostile environments, human nature's most elemental drives, and worker abuse in industrialized society. Aside from "When God Laughs," the other stories included are "The Apostate," "A Wicked Woman," "Just Meat," "Created He Them," "The Chinago," "Make Westing," "Semper Idem," "A Nose for the King," "The 'Francis Spaight,'" "A Curious Fragment," and "A Piece of Steak." Born John Griffith Chaney, Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist who became one of the first American authors to gain international celebrity status. Considered an innovator of science fiction, London was a passionate advocate of unionization, workers' rights, and socialism. He is most famous for writing "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang," both set in the Klondike Gold Rush which London joined at the age of 21 in 1897.
