Whiting Manufacturing Co traces its origins to the firm Tifft & Whiting, founded in 1840 by Albert C. Tifft and William Dean Whiting. Through several partnerships including Whiting & Gooding, Whiting Fessenden & Cowan, and Whiting Cowan & Bowen, the business was formally established as Whiting Manufacturing Company in 1866. After a factory fire in North Attleboro, Massachusetts in 1875, operations were relocated to New York at 692-694 Broadway. The company became known for producing finely crafted silverware in relatively small quantities, including notable designs by Charles Osborne, one of the important designers of the American Aesthetic Movement. Whiting was purchased by Gorham in 1924, with production later transferred to Providence, Rhode Island.
