Description:

Near East, Yemen, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wearable necklace comprised of nickel-brass and silver beads with 3 Bakelite beads along the strand, and a hook clasp closure. The larger spherical and capsule shaped metal beads are embellished with scrolling wirework. Two of the Bakelite beads are barrel shaped, and the central pendant is carved into a substantial cube, the corners rounded. Trade with Germany, Czech Republic, and other European countries probably brought Bakelite beads to Africa / Near Eastern Countries. This novel material was prized for its resemblance to copal amber. Size of strand: 23" L (58.4 cm); Bakelite pendant: 1.25" L x 1.25" W (3.2 cm x 3.2 cm)
