Description:

North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. 1935 CE. Signed "Pat Coito / Honokaa, Hawaii / 2-05-35 / Koa" on base. A beautiful calabash bowl, skillfully hand-carved from the wood of the flowering Acacia Koa tree, whose name interestingly translates to "fearless warrior." Boasting a natural woodgrain surface in rich hues of golden caramel, chocolate, and espresso, the impressive vessel features a planar base and smooth walls that rise up to a wide mouth with a beveled rim. Size: 8.2" Diameter x 2.8" H (20.8 cm x 7.1 cm)

Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Prior to the 19th century, they were made with stone and coral tools, carved from kou, milo, and kamani trees most commonly.
