Hobart Nichols (American, 1869-1962). "Sunlight on Snow" oil on canvas, ca. 1940s to 1950s. Signed on lower right. A stunning landscape painting by Hobart Nichols, finely executed in his signature realist style with a masterful treatment of light and color. Nichols invites the viewer into this wintery New England scene via a sinuous running river flanked by snowy banks dotted by mature trees, leading the eye to rolling hills in the distance and billowing clouds in the azure skies above. A tranquil winter scene with natural light softly illuminating the snow and waters, mounted in an attractive custom frame. About the artist: Hobart Nichols was born May 1, 1869, in Washington, D.C. He attended Shortledge College in Pennsylvania and studied with Howard Helmick and Edmund Clarence Messer at the Art Students League of Washington D.C. Nichols went on to study at the Froebel Institute in Germany as well as the Academie Julian in Paris under Caludio Castelucho. His many important roles included: illustrator for the U. S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of American Ethnology from 1889 until 1895; assistant to the director, U. S. Art Commission, Paris World's Fair, 1900; President of the National Academy of Design, 1939–49, and Director of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, 1939–59.   • Condition: Painting is signed "Hobart Nichols" at lower right and in very good overall condition with expected craquelure. There is a patch on the verso of the canvas which suggests some conservation. Frame is stamped "Made in Belgium" on the verso and presents with some chips, surface wear, stains, and touch up to the finish. Fit with suspension wire.
