Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Guerrero region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A charming collection of 3 dance masks in ascending sizes, made from tin with gauze backing and painted as spotted, wild cats. These festival masks were used during the "Dance of the Tiger" performed throughout Mexico to protect livestock and farmers from feline predators. While tigers are not native to the Americas, the indigenous and Nahua people were very familiar with jaguars or "tecuani" which translates to something like "large beast / people biter." Early Spanish colonizers likely called the big cats "tigers" which they were probably more familiar with, but the "tiger" dance has ancient roots in Pre-Columbian cultures such as the Olmec who revered jaguars as supernatural beings and warrior figures. This family of cats, papa, mama, and baby- may have once been secured on top of each other with the dancer wearing the largest on his face. Size of largest: 10" Diameter x 10.5" H (25.4 cm x 26.7 cm)
