Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. 1950s CE. A charming wooden rattle with a triangular head presenting a visage with characteristically Northwest Coast features - thick black brows, wide eyes with large black irises surrounded by aqua blue, red nostrils flanking the hooked black beak, and red downturned lips. Surrounding this face and continuing over the back is a finely grooved surface, perhaps to represent hair or plumage. The contiguous wooden handle is tubular, unpainted, and smooth to the touch. Shake it to hear a rich, deep rattling sound! Rattles, like many instruments in this tradition, are linked with shamanic practice. Size: 5.1" W x 10.7" H (13 cm x 27.2 cm); 12.55" H (31.9 cm) on included custom stand.
