Latin America, Guatemala, Patzunca. 1960s CE. A lovely Patzún Guatemalan huipil (from the Nahuatl word huipilli - a form of Maya textiles and tunic/blouses traditionally worn by various indigenous peoples including Maya, Zapotec, and other women in central and southern Mexico) of a beautiful scarlet red hue with finely embroidered multi-colored, half inch striated bands set two inches apart. The seam is embroidered in different colored segments, and though this example has small arm holes, there is no opening for a head. This said, a suspension rod would easily fit through the arm holes to create an attractive wall panel. Patzún is a Kaqchikel speaking village of Chimaltenango, and their two-paneled, back-strap loomed huipils are a favorite among many Mayan women. Size: 32" W x 21" H (81.3 cm x 53.3 cm)
