Description:

Native American, Northwest Coast, made by Ivan "Coyote" Otterlifter (Cherokee, lived from 1936-1999), ca. 1960s CE. A hand-carved wooden mask in the form of a fox, with an elongated snout, bright colors, and dramatic black hair hanging from its ears. Inside the mouth of the fox is a leaping human figure who seems to be reaching out to escape the animal's teeth. The nostrils and lips are painted bright red while the large eyes are encircled by brilliant turquoise pigment. The tall ears are also painted. Size: 16.25" L x 7.5" W x 9.5" H (41.3 cm x 19 cm x 24.1 cm); 17.25" H (43.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Interestingly, Ivan Otterlifter was a member of the Cherokee nation who made artwork in the Northwest Coast tradition.
