Description:

Contemporary oil on canvas, 1964. Signature and date at lower right; signature is difficult to decipher. A fabulous mid-century modern painting depicting an artist's studio. The composition includes a blank canvas on an easel in the center; a stand for holding paints, brushes, and other artist tools beside it; several paintings on the walls; and a figure (perhaps the artist) visible through the glass pane of the studio door at the left. All is delineated in a dynamic abstract figurative style with loose brushwork, passages of thickly applied impasto, and a vibrant palette. The artist's studio has been a popular theme throughout the ages with famous examples such as Gustave Courbet's "The Artist's Studio" (1854-1855), Diego Velazquez's "Las Meninas" (1656), and Johannes Vermeer's "The Art of Painting" (1666-68). This painting reasserts that tradition through a modernist's lens. Size (painting): 27.5" L x 35.4" W (69.8 cm x 89.9 cm) Size (frame): 28" L x 36" W (71.1 cm x 91.4 cm)
