Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 1997 CE. A lovely vintage wood and papier-mache box inlaid with a nacre shell then painted in oil and lacquer with a tranquil birch trees and lake scene. The hinged lid opens easily to reveal the red interior, and the lower front edge is painted with a scrolling gilt motif. The lid is signed on the lower right in Cyrillic and the town Fedoskino and year to the left. The nacre is incorporated seamlessly as the reflective lake in the foreground, the painted trees and laid on top. Size: 3.25" L x 2.75" W x 1.375" H (8.3 cm x 7 cm x 3.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
