Description:

West Africa, Ghana, Akan, ca. 19th Century CE. Carved from a tawny terracotta with areas of blush red hues, a captivating countenance presenting intriguing traits such as coffee bean shaped eyes, a full nose, pursed lips, pronounced cup-shape ears with partial perforations perhaps for inserting decorative ornaments, and a stylized coiffure - all upon an ovoid, elongated head. A very fine Akan terracotta ancestral head that served as a stylized funerary portrait in memoriam to the deceased. Size: 3.375" H (8.6 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex- Collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA
