North America, United States, ca. late 19th century CE. A nice example of a shoeshine bench with a large rectangular body with a swiveled door that opens to reveal an interior compartment. The 5-cent cost of a shoeshine is displayed in white on the back as well as in red on the unhinged side with a faint figure standing next to the red pigment. The cast-iron shoe rest is attached to a lateral plank and features an openwork design with an S and R flanking a broad star. Included is a horsehair polishing brush with a wooden handle covered in black lacquer. Size: 25.4" L x 6.4" W x 12.375" H (64.5 cm x 16.3 cm x 31.4 cm)

  • Condition: Stabilization to lengthy fissure across top with a zigzagging iron panel. Abrasions and fading to original pigment, with light encrustations, and minor splintering in some areas, otherwise intact and very good. Nice remains of original pigment throughout. Brush has minor abrasions but is also intact.
