Description:

North America, Western United States, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. An impressive steel knife with a brass guard, wooden grip, and a tacked leather sheath. The knife features a narrow and slightly curved blade with a single cutting edge and pointed tip. A brass ring protects the top of the wooden handle. The wood is a pretty light brown hue with darker graining and has a very smooth patina from age and use! The leather sheath was simply constructed from one piece of leather that was folded and then riveted along one edge to create a pocket and loop for holding the knife and attaching to a belt. The rivets give the sheath an intimidating look while also strengthening the leather. Such knives and sheaths were used for trade with Native Americans. Size of blade: 6.375" L x 1" W (16.2 cm x 2.5 cm); in sheath: 13.5" L x 4.65" W (34.3 cm x 11.8 cm)
