Description:

North America, United States, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden box in a zoomorphic form with two bovine or ungulate bone lids that swivel on an iron nail. The box is in the form a bull lying down with prominent genitalia and the legs tucked underneath. Marked on the base is "JVDW" with "JJVDW" and "LGM" on the sides. The interior cavity is rectangular and carved out of the bull's back. This curious box is finely shaped and the surface has a nice smooth patina. This may have held tobacco or other small possessions and the double bone lid was probably secured at one time with a nail or latch above the tail. A fascinating piece of folk art that is beautifully carved! Size: 5.5" W x 1.9" H (14 cm x 4.8 cm)
