Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely folding brise fan made of bovine bone and ribbon. There are 19 panels of identical lengths stacked at the base, held together with a rivet, and tethered together with ribbon through the top. The bone is intricately carved and pierced to give the appearance of lace. Each panel contains people, buildings, and trees that create a complete pastoral scene when fanned out. Folding fans were invented in Japan before making their way to China and later into Europe. Through the 18th and 19th century, bone and ivory fans were primarily made for export to European countries and were highly valued among ladies for their folding convenience and delicate patterns! Size of fan: 12" L x 7" H (30.5 cm x 17.8 cm); size of frame: 15.675" L x 1.25" W x 11.375" H (39.8 cm x 3.2 cm x 28.9 cm)
