East Asia, China, Late Qing dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A fine wooden carving of a flying Lohan (Arhat) holding a strand with coins of fortune, skillfully rendered with impressive details on both sides. On the front, the figure assumes a dramatic pose below the boughs of a leafy tree, with a lizard-like creature below, while on the verso, the sculptor rendered the back of the figure surrounded by clouds of the celestial realm. In Mahayana Buddhism, Arhats (or Lohans in Chinese) were understood as the original followers of Buddha who followed the Eightfold Path and attained the Four Stages of Enlightenment and deliverance from mere earthly existence. Lohans or Arhats are known for possessing immense wisdom, fortitude, bravery in the face of evil, and supernatural powers. They have become known as the guardian angels of Buddhist temples. In Theravada Buddhist traditions, an Arhat is regarded as a 'perfected person' who has attained Nirvana. In other Buddhist traditions the term has been used for people far advanced along the path of Enlightenment but who have not reached full Buddhahood. It is thought that Arhats have successfully arrived at what is known as the 'other shore' and are at peace for all eternity. Gone are all 'asavas' or desires for sensual pleasure, incorrect viewpoints, and ignorance. A lovely sculpture of this revered spiritual being.

- Condition: A few expected age cracks and chips/perforations to surface. Upper periphery is rough hewn, as are some areas of the peripheries. Overall, the carving is impressive with wonderful details. The veneer of the stand has a few reattached sections and scuffs.
