Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful, ornately carved wooden panel, possibly a window shutter, featuring three openwork sections, each set within a deep frame, depicting high relief artwork. The upper area presents two galloping horses; the lower contains vases and vessels with food. The largest composition, in the center, features a scene of foliate vines with robed figures. The bottom portion has three figures, two men seated at a table, and the other lying in the ground. Above are two men similarly robed and stand before a building with a curved tile roof. A third man sits under the building. These men are likely scholarly figures or officials. One lower side of the frame projects outward in a short tab, suggesting that the panel may have been a shutter made to be set in a window frame. Size: 17.675" L x 1.75" W x 41" H (44.9 cm x 4.4 cm x 104.1 cm)
