**First Time At Auction**

Emil (Soren Emil) Carlsen (American born in Denmark, 1853-1932). Untitled still life - oil on canvas, ca. 1880s. Signed at lower right. A beautiful still life painting by Emil Carlsen mounted in an antique frame that may be original. The composition includes (counter clockwise beginning at lower left) six acorns, an apple with a few blemishes, half of an apple, two apple slices and an apple core on a porcelain plate, a spherical crystal vase filled with violets, and a tall crystal goblet filled with a libation presumably poured from the elegant bottle beside it. This lovely arrangement is displayed upon a white linen tablecloth, and all is bathed in bright light, making for a dramatic contrast with the dark interior setting. Carlsen had an uncanny ability to create finely painted still lifes featuring simple objects in stark interiors with a sense of visual harmony that rivaled his idol, 18th century French master Jean Simeon Chardin. Size (painting): 18" L x 19.125" W (45.7 cm x 48.6 cm) Size (frame): 26.5" L x 27.75" W (67.3 cm x 70.5 cm)

About the artist: Emil Carlsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and immigrated to the United States at age 19. Known for his brilliant still-life paintings, Carlsen was greatly influenced by the French master Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin and became a leading light in France's Chardin revival when studying in Paris in the 1880s. During his second sojourn in Paris from 1884 to 1886, Carlsen fell under the spell of the French Impressionists' command of light and color and adopted the spontaneity of Impressionism.

Luce Artist Biography: "Emil Carlsen studied architecture in Copenhagen and moved to Chicago when he was nineteen. In the 1870s he lived in Boston, creating background scenes for paintings of animals. He could not support himself, however, and had to put his work up for auction to pay his bills. Not many of his paintings sold, so Carlsen worked as an engraver to pay his debt. He described himself as 'dog-poor,' but in 1883 his luck changed when one of his paintings was accepted for an exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. A New York dealer saw the show and offered to support Carlsen's studies in Paris in return for the artist's still-life paintings. After two years, Carlsen grew tired of painting 'endless yellow roses' and returned to New York, where he created landscapes inspired by his New England surroundings.
