Description:

Western Europe, probably Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A fantastic die cast iron gorget, or neck armor, with a scene in relief. This finely detailed piece is curved to fit around the neck and rest on the collar bone area. The relief scene is a detailed and dynamic battle, with soldiers on horseback fighting with spears and swords. Two perforations are drilled on the edges for attaching this front facing gorget to the back plate. Traditionally the gorget was worn in two pieces; a back and a front with a hinge on both sides of the shoulder for easy removal; however, they became more symbolic in their usage as full metal armor became less popular, and they were often worn on a chain to indicate rank or status. This beautiful gorget could certainly deflect some missiles but was more likely intended to be a decorative piece of military insignia for ceremony and processions. Lucite stand for photography purposes only. Size: 7" L x 7.75" W (17.8 cm x 19.7 cm)
