Description:

Western/Central Europe, Germany, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful sallet helmet of a solid form with a shallow crest running centrally along the domed top. Several brass rivets line the top of the brow above the narrow slight slit, and the neck panel extends slightly lower than the bottom of the face guard. Many contemporary sallet helmets from Italy and France featured hinged face guards, however the German design excluded the auxiliary component in favor of a solid construction. Size: 9" W x 9.5" H (22.9 cm x 24.1 cm); 18.25" H (46.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Cf. an example from the late 15th century at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 25.135.62.

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
