South India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful altar cloth featuring a central rectangular panel intricately decorated with embroidery and appliques. The design features a mandala lotus flower in the center flanked by Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, sitting upon a sacred cow and Lakshmi, goddess of wealth, love, and music riding a peacock, heralded as the most auspicious bird in Hindu mythology who is associated with the goddess of wealth, surrounded by an integral border of abstract, nature-inspired motifs - all in short cut velveteen fabrics of orange, red, green, beige, and black hues - Lakshmi's peacock with peacock blue as well - AND marvelous embroidery. This panel is framed by a contemporary Tibetan brocade adorned with a beautiful lotus blossom pattern in fuchsia, tangerine, aqua, sky blue, and gold threads over a violet ground.
