South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A cast-brass figure of Shiva, the Hindu deity regarded as both creator and destroyer of the universe, that is also known as Shiva Nataraja (also Nataraaj, meaning "Lord of the Dancers"). Shiva presents in a dancing pose with his left leg out and his right leg standing atop a defeated foe. He holds his 4 arms out in a festive manner while serpents radiate outwards from behind his head, and his entire body is framed within a circular arch of flames known as the prabha mandala. Size: 7.6" W x 9.2" H (19.3 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000
