Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved wooden panel with a pair of Hindu deities seated upon arched thrones, perhaps Vishnu and Lakshmi. Although the piece rests on integral feet like a devotional piece for an altar or shrine, this carving may have been a decorative part of a temple chariot (ratha). The figures sit on the narrow shelf like seat, with tall crowns or headdresses, and jewelry adorning their bodies, and between the figures is a lotus blossom. Size: 8" L x 3" W x 8.25" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: private Friday Harbor, Washington, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
