Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan/northern India, Indo-Persian period, ca. 19th century CE. An attractive brass shield known as a dhal, a form of buckler shield, presenting a circular shape with a convex face embellished with an elaborate etched design of red, black, and gold enamel and 4 ornamental bosses. The decorative program on the face is comprised of intricate, stylized leafy tendril motifs surrounded by a border of running leaves. Alternatively, the verso presents 4 brass loops surrounding a velvet knuckle pad. A wonderful example of a shield that demonstrates the Persians' influence on Indian culture during the Mughal Empire, which lasted from the 16th to the 19th century CE. Size: 14.6" Diameter (37.1 cm)
