Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa era, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A long strand of 39 mixed-material ojime beads, featuring a diverse array of carved, molded, and turned examples strung on cord. The beads include bone, cow horn, wood, lacquer, and molded glass, with several pieces showing intricate inlays, openwork, and incised or lacquered motifs. A molded green bead is composed of leaded material, possibly Peking glass, and a carved red bead with yellowish incised lines formed from cinnabar-type lacquer containing arsenic-based pigments. This eclectic collection captures the charm and variety of ojime craftsmanship, where each bead served as a miniature work of art. Size of bead: 0.6" Diameter (1.5 cm); strand: 54" L (137.2 cm)
