Description:

East Asia, Japan, late Edo era, ca. mid-19th century CE. This paper booklet, bound with embroidery thread, contains family crests known as mon or kamon, along with information about land ownership and professions. The booklet features approximately 100 pages bound in the fukuro-toji style, a technique where folded sheets of paper are stitched along the open edge, creating double-leaved pages with the fold on the outer edge, resulting in a durable and flexible format. The text is written in black ink and accompanied by small illustrations of the crests. Mon are typically displayed on clothing, documents, businesses, or household items, while samurai had kamon emblazoned on their armor and banners. This booklet may have served as a guide for navigating social networks or as a reference for tailors and artisans to replicate patterns for their clients. Size: 6.25" L x 2.6" W (15.9 cm x 6.6 cm).
