Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A remarkable gilt brass oni or demon, cast in the style of Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama, dressed in a flowing robe decorated with stylized ho-o bird roundels and a dragon amidst clouds. Affixed to a stand in the form of a rocky outcrop, he stands barefoot, raising his right hand while bending his left at the elbow, hand clenched in a tight fist. Oni figures represent all the traits and emotions associated with human wrongdoing, and they are said to linger around evil people. These wicked spirits can be cast out of the home by voicing simple chants and throwing soybeans. A nice dark patina covers this fabulous piece! Size: 8.1" L x 12" W x 20.75" H (20.6 cm x 30.5 cm x 52.7 cm)

About Miyao Eisuke of Yokohama: "The Miyao Company of Yokohama, under its founder Miyao Eisuke, was a prolific producer of medium to large-scale patinated and gilded bronze ornamental sculptures. These works often depicted characters from Japanese legend and mythology and as such appealed both to the Japanese market, where the subject matter would be clearly understood, and the Western market where the sheer exoticism of the subject matter together with fine workmanship would appeal."
