Description:

South Pacific, New Zealand, Maori, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A finely carved hei matau (fish hook pendant) fashioned from whale bone, exhibiting a characteristic crescent form with a deeply curved body and prominent barbed termination. The piece features a subtly incised suspension notch, allowing it to be worn as a pendant. Hei matau were not only functional tools used in traditional fishing but also sacred taonga (treasures), symbolizing strength, prosperity, safe travel over water, and a deep connection to Tangaroa, the god of the sea. This example’s well-preserved surface exhibits a rich, aged patina with light wear indicative of traditional use and age. A fine representation of Maori carving skill and cultural symbolism. Size: 1.75" W x 2.25" H (4.4 cm x 5.7 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
