Description:

North America, Mexico or United States, ca. 19th century CE. A fine example of a horse bridle braided from lengths of horsehair and dyed in brown and tan hues. The bridle has tassels bound to the back ends and wrappings of red fabric accentuating several areas, and a steel horse bit secured to the front displays dangling ornamentation that would hang out of the horse's mouth. A pair of lengthy reins is suspended to the front of the bridle and bit via steel chain links and features a similar chromatic pattern as the bridle. Horse bridles like this example were an essential component for early frontiersmen that enabled a rider to command a greater level of control over his equestrian mount. Size (bridle): 27" L (68.6 cm); (reins): 79.5" L (201.9 cm)
