Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A rattle made from six deer hooves attached with string to an anthropomorphic wooden handle. The top of the handle is painted with black and red to resemble a face wearing a traditional spruce root hat. The six deer hooves rattle and clack together when shaken. Native Americans across the temperate zones of North America use deer hoof rattles for a variety of purposes - in ceremonial dances, as part of traditional medicine, to speak with nature, and in initiation rites.
