Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century. A very rare oil on canvas painting depicting San Jacinto (Saint Hyacinth) as he rescues the Sacred Sacrament and the statue of the Virgin and Child from a burning cathedral in the distance. According to legend, the statue of "Our Lady" was enormous and quite heavy, some say weighing even more than Jacinto himself; however, the statue miraculously became weightless during this rescue. San Jacinto is the saint worshippers invoke when in danger of drowning; this is why the artist included a sole man on a raft at the lower left and a cow in the waters on the lower right. Finally "S. Jacinto" is hand painted on the lower right as well. A beautiful painting of this important saint. Size: 15.25" L x 12.75" W (38.7 cm x 32.4 cm)

Provenance: ex private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection; ex private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection
