Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th century CE. A fine brass statue of Buddha depicted in a pose known as Parinirvana Buddha or paang sai yat - reclining to his right side with his head supported by his right arm. The slender figure of the deity is draped in flowing robes as his left arm lays parallel to his body with his left hand just below his hip. A petite pillow rests below his right arm, which supports his tranquil visage, comprised of slender eyes beneath a straight brow, a wide nose, and bowed lips, all capped by a tightly coiled coiffure and a flaming ushnisha. An urna, representing his third eye, adorns his forehead. Beneath his bed, the periphery of his pedestal is incised with Thai script. Size: 8.4" L x 3.3" W x 2.6" H (21.3 cm x 8.4 cm x 6.6 cm)
