Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A richly adorned Tibetan brass sculpture of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom, seated in dhyanasana upon a double-lotus base. The figure is lavishly inlaid with cabochons of blue magnesite and red stones, their vibrant hues enhancing the sacred presence of the deity. Manjushri is depicted with serene expression, crowned and jeweled, his right arm raised to brandish the flaming sword of insight that severs ignorance, while his left hand is held in vitarka mudra, a gesture of teaching and transmission. At his shoulder rests a lotus stalk supporting the prajnaparamita manuscript, the Buddhist scripture of transcendent wisdom. The figure wears an elaborate crown inset with jewels, with strands of beaded necklaces, earrings, and bracelets rendered in finely chased detail. The base is encircled with repeated lotus petal motifs, each inset with alternating red and blue stones, symbolizing purity and spiritual awakening. Size: 4.5" L x 6.25" W x 6.5" H (11.4 cm x 15.9 cm x 16.5 cm)
Such works embody the devotional artistry of 19th century Tibet, uniting metalwork skill, sacred iconography, and jewel inlay to create an image of both beauty and spiritual potency. Manjushri, long venerated across the Himalayan world, represents transcendent wisdom and eloquence, qualities particularly revered within Tibetan Buddhist practice.
