Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of repousse copper Tibetan Snow Lion plaques each depicted dramatically rearing up with wide eyes and huge grins of jagged teeth as they grasp long strands of prayer beads in their front paws. Enamel in red and blue are inlaid along the beads strands. These panels would have probably been hung on a wall near a entrance to a temple as protective symbols. The Snow Lion is a celestial animal and emblem of Tibet, that represents the snowy mountain ranges and glaciers of the country. They are also typically considered a symbol of power, strength, fearlessness, and joy, their iconography often incorporated into toranas (an elaborate arching panel-back that would have surrounded a buddha or bodhisattva figure). Size: 15" L x 11" W (38.1 cm x 27.9 cm)
