Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast / Cote d' Ivoire, Baule or Akan peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A tall statue hand-carved from a singular piece of wood featuring a nude woman. The woman stands on an integral rectangular pedestal, facing forward with cupped hands resting against her wide hips. Her breasts are small in contrast to her broad shoulders. The tall neck is incised with rings and supports the oversized head. The face features a wide-eyed visage with bulging round eyes, a small nose, and an incised line for the mouth. The coiffure is delineted with small ridges in the front and wider ridges on the back of the head. The surface of the wood is covered with a thick, dark patina. A wonderful example! Size: 4.5" L x 3.5" W x 18.5" H (11.4 cm x 8.9 cm x 47 cm)
